Valheim Weapons Guide: Types, Damage Resistances and Stamina

How Valheim weapon types differ, how damage type and resistances decide fights, and how to choose a weapon by biome stage instead of chasing a tier list.

There is no single best weapon in Valheim. What decides fights is a product: damage type × enemy resistance × stamina budget. Axes, swords and clubs are cheap on stamina and fit most situations; two-handers (battleaxe, two-handed sword, sledgehammer) hit harder per swing but spend a large chunk of stamina doing it; bows and crossbows are the only reliable ranged option; staves switch you to a completely different resource after the Mistlands. Check the next enemy’s weakness first, then decide which weapon to carry — not the other way round.

Why damage type matters more than the weapon

Chopping and mining count as terrain damage, but combat damage resolves by type, and every boss has an explicit weakness, resistance and immunity table:

  • Bonemass: weak to blunt and frost; resists fire, pierce and slash;
  • Moder: weak to fire; immune to frost and spirit;
  • Yagluth: resists fire and pierce;
  • The Queen: resists pierce; immune to spirit;
  • Fader: resists pierce; immune to fire and spirit.

Carrying a weapon the target resists multiplies your effective kill time until you run out of supplies. That is why swapping one weapon usually beats carrying two more stacks of potions.

How weapon skill levels change damage

Every weapon type has its own skill level. Using a type accumulates skill, and higher skill raises that type’s damage and some action efficiency. Swapping types constantly dilutes your progress, so concentrate on two or three lines early instead of sampling everything.

Stamina budget: one-handed, two-handed, ranged

  • One-handed plus shield: the most stamina-efficient default, because you can block and attack.
  • Two-handed: noticeably higher cost per swing, best against large, slow targets.
  • Ranged: continuous stamina drain while drawing, good for opening damage and interrupts but rarely a standalone plan.
  • Magic: spends eitr rather than stamina, and needs matching gear and food.

Choosing by stage

  1. Meadows / Black Forest: stone axe, wooden shield, bow — keep skill points in axe and bow;
  2. Swamp: add a club for Bonemass and carry frost arrows;
  3. Mountain: fire weapons against Moder, spears for flying targets;
  4. Plains: upgrade to black metal, remembering Yagluth resists fire;
  5. Mistlands onward: rebuild around the resistance table and start considering staves;
  6. Ashlands and Deep North: the 40+ weapons added in 1.0 sit in the late tiers, so pick by boss resistance.

Why this site publishes no weapon tier list

A ranking needs a single scoring rubric and reproducible data. Weapon value in Valheim depends heavily on enemy resistance, playstyle and team role, and Iron Gate publishes no ranking at all. This page therefore gives conditional advice rather than a pseudo-precise S/A/B list. Different rankings exist in community videos; those are creator opinions.

What media and players say about combat

IGN (Len Hafer, 2026-09-08) scored the game 10/10, but its caveat is worth reading alongside the score: Valheim’s combat is slower than its neighbours and rewards preparation more than execution.

The typical Steam complaint mirrors that: one player describes a loop where “you’ll be running, cutting, mining, sorting out chests for like 90% of your game time, and the other 10% is very basic combat.” That describes the early game: before you have the biome’s weapon tier and food, fights really are simple, and the difficulty comes from being unprepared rather than from mechanical depth.

The conclusion holds on the player side too: line up damage type and resistance first, then talk about execution.

Media reviews are independent verdicts, not official statements. Player quotes are from Steam reviews sampled on 2026-09-11.

Version and limits

  • This page targets Valheim 1.0 (released 2026-09-09).
  • Weapon damage and stamina values are community data and shift between patches, so no hard numbers are frozen here.
  • The resistance table comes from the maintained community wiki; Iron Gate has not published complete resistance data.
