On PC, open the console, type devcommands to gain debug access, and then use individual commands — they are case sensitive. Before you do, be clear about the cost: the official 1.0 FAQ states that using most commands, such as spawn, flags your character and world save and permanently locks achievements, with only a few exceptions such as freefly. To regain achievement eligibility you have to remove every cheated item you are carrying or have placed.

Enabling it and confirming it works

  1. Open the console in the PC version;
  2. Enter devcommands to enable debug commands;
  3. Run a harmless command such as the help listing to confirm access;
  4. Toggle devcommands again to switch it back off.

Note: Iron Gate has not said whether consoles offer a developer console, so this page gives no console steps.

The cost: achievements and cheat flags

The official 1.0 FAQ rules reduce to three points:

  1. Most commands permanently lock achievements. spawn flags your character and world save, after which achievements can no longer unlock.
  2. A few commands are exceptions, such as freefly.
  3. Entering a cheated state now requires confirmation, added in 1.0 so you cannot flag a character by accident.

Separately, world modifiers such as hammer-mode also block certain achievements; Iron Gate counts that as temporary cheating.

Clearing temporary cheat state

  • Items created with spawn are visibly marked;
  • a non-cheated character who picks up a cheated item enters a temporary cheat state;
  • while in that state achievements cannot unlock;
  • drop every cheated item and the character becomes eligible again.

What happens on a multiplayer server

Some commands act globally when run on a server: nomap and noportals flip the matching global key, which means every player loses their map or portals. Confirm you have permission and that your group knows before you run them.

Unconfirmed items

  • Console on consoles: Iron Gate has not said whether console versions expose a developer console, so no steps are given.
  • Complete exception list: only freefly is given as an example, so do not assume spawn is the only command that locks achievements.

What the community says about it

The argument is not about whether commands work but about what you give up. Because 1.0 writes the cheat flag into the save, the advice that recurs in community threads is simple: if you care about achievements, do not run spawn on your main save.

Community “safe command” lists are also incomplete — Iron Gate only named freefly. Some Steam reviewers describe Valheim as “not for everyone” and suggest adjusting world settings instead, which is the same trade in a different form: experience in exchange for achievements and a sense of accomplishment.

Version and limits

  • This page targets Valheim 1.0 (released 2026-09-09).
  • The command list comes from the community wiki and may not include every 1.0 addition.
  • Iron Gate has not published a server permission model, so multiplayer behaviour may vary by host.
