Valheim Beginner Guide: What to Do in Your First Hours

Your first hours in Valheim, in order: what to gather, which crafting station to build first, why food and rest decide survival, and where new players get stuck.

Your first job in Valheim is not exploring — it is building a survival base. Gather wood and stone for a stone axe, hammer and torch, place a workbench inside a roofed shelter with a bed and a campfire, then fill all three food slots before you fight anything. Only after those four steps are done should you leave your spawn point to hunt boar and greylings. Plenty of first runs end because someone walked into the Black Forest on an empty stomach, and that is a mistake you fix by reordering your first hour, not by restarting.

The first 10 minutes: craft these three tools

Only four recipes live in your inventory, and three of them are non-negotiable:

ItemRecipeWhat it is for
Stone axe4 stone + 5 woodChopping trees, fighting, harvesting corpses
Hammer3 wood + 2 stoneBuilding and tearing down structures
Torch1 wood + 1 resinLight at night, and it sets enemies on fire

The stone axe is far stronger than your fists and is the only reliable way to get wood. Pick up every branch and stone you pass, and chop the first beech or fir you see — that covers everything the first ten minutes require.

Workbench and a shelter you can actually sleep in

Once you have wood, place a workbench under a roof — it loses levels when it sits in the rain, while nearby chests, campfires and structures raise its level. Put a bed next to it to reset your spawn point, and a campfire for the Rested buff and warmth.

The payoff is concrete: when you die, you respawn in your own house instead of walking back from the world spawn. For the first few hours this is the single best investment you can make.

Why food and rest decide whether you survive

Valheim has no starvation, but running on empty food slots leaves you half-crippled. Food raises the maximum and the regeneration rate of health and stamina, and those two numbers decide:

  • how much stagger you absorb while blocking — a bigger health pool means fewer interrupts;
  • how many dodges, blocks, sprints and swings you chain before running dry;
  • how fast you recover, which the Rested buff accelerates further.

You do not need fancy food early. Cooked meat, berries and mead are enough. Fill all three slots before you leave the base, even with cheap food — walking out with empty slots is the most common rookie death.

Clear the Meadows and build your first gear set

The Meadows is the lowest-difficulty biome, and the goal there is a leather-tier kit:

  1. Clear boar, deer and greylings with the stone axe to bank leather scraps and deer hide;
  2. Craft rag tunic and rag pants, then upgrade to leather tunic and leather pants;
  3. Build a bow and arrows to handle greylings and anything at range;
  4. Drop a chest or two next to the workbench and sort your materials.

Move into the Black Forest: copper, tin and ancient seeds

The Black Forest is the first real difficulty jump. Go in fed and geared, and target three things:

  • Copper and tin, smelted into bronze for the bronze equipment tier;
  • Ancient seeds for summoning The Elder;
  • Core wood along the way, for better bows and building pieces.

Greydwarf nests keep spawning enemies, so work in daylight and pull back at night. The real goal here is finishing a bronze set before you go back for Eikthyr.

Summon and beat Eikthyr

Eikthyr is the first Forsaken and lives in the Meadows. Reading a runestone marks the altar on your map, and summoning costs 2 deer trophies.

Preparation checklist:

  • three food slots filled, health-leaning;
  • leather armour plus a wooden or bronze shield;
  • a bow and at least one stack of arrows for ranged chip damage;
  • a bed or a small forward camp nearby so a failed attempt is cheap to retry.

Take the trophy back to the Sacrificial Stones at your spawn to unlock Eikthyr’s power: 60% reduced stamina drain for running, jumping and swimming.

Solo versus co-op openers

Valheim 1.0 supports 1–10 players with full crossplay. In co-op the opening changes shape:

  • gathering and building split across the group, so progress is much faster;
  • there is one world save, and everyone shares progress;
  • enemy count and damage do not scale linearly with players, so communication is the real variable;
  • when you die your gear drops where you fell, and teammates can recover it for you.

The five things that actually stall new players

  1. Leaving with empty food slots. Low max health means you get stagger-locked to death.
  2. Skipping past the Black Forest. Swamp and Mountain damage outscales early gear.
  3. Never building a bed. Every death becomes a cross-map walk.
  4. Leaving the workbench in the rain. Its level drops and recipes grey out.
  5. Expecting 1.0 to inherit old achievements. Achievements start counting from the version you downloaded, so Eikthyr has to be killed again.

What media and players say about this opening

  • IGN (Len Hafer, 2026-09-08) scored it 10/10, calling it “the oath of the ultimate survival crafting adventure fulfilled and carved into the very bones of the Earth” — while stressing that Valheim’s friction is real and starting from scratch is a big commitment.
  • PCGamesN (Shaun Walton, 2026-09-08) scored it 8/10, praising the content but saying the full journey “will take days and frustrate players to no end.”
  • The highest-voted negative Steam reviews cluster on one complaint: no craft-from-containers and no quick deposit, so chest management eats time. A 2,481-hour player lists that as the only reason for their thumbs-down.

The practical takeaway for your opening is small and immediate: keep chests next to the workbench and sort by material. It saves hundreds of trips later.

Version and limits

  • This guide targets Valheim 1.0 (released 2026-09-09).
  • Recipe values and station levels shift between patches; this page explains the mechanics instead of freezing numbers.
  • The optimal opening order is community consensus, not an official step-by-step tutorial. Iron Gate publishes mechanics, platforms and save rules, not a walkthrough.
