Valheim 1.0 Update: Deep North and Everything It Added
Everything the Valheim 1.0 update added, where Deep North sits, which engine and system changes shipped, and what it means for saves, achievements and mods.

Valheim 1.0 is the full release that ended Early Access. Its headline is the new Deep North biome, and it ships alongside 40+ new weapons, 4 new armor sets, 2 new capes, 2 new trinkets, 10+ new creatures, 80+ new building pieces, 30+ new crafting materials and 20+ new food items, plus an achievement system and a Unity engine upgrade. Three changes matter most to returning players: old saves still work but a new world is recommended, achievements start counting from 1.0, and Iron Gate does not guarantee any existing mod works on 1.0.
What 1.0 added
The official patch notes list:
| Category | Added |
|---|---|
| Biome | Deep North |
| Weapons | 40+ new weapons |
| Ammunition | New bombs and ammunition |
| Armor | 4 new armor sets, 2 new capes, 2 new trinkets |
| Tools and building | New tools, 80+ new buildable pieces, 5 new crafting-related build pieces |
| Creatures | 10+ new creatures |
| Materials and food | 30+ new crafting materials, 20+ new food items |
| Other | New locations, new music, new events, new mechanics, upgradeable pockets, achievements |
Fixes and improvements: a new draw distance graphics setting, a hammer and serving tray menu overhaul, the Magica cloth system, overhauled descriptions, rebalanced Ashlands spawn rates, all hair and beard styles available from the start, a Unity engine upgrade and numerous smaller fixes.
What Deep North is
Deep North sits at the far north of the world and is the eighth biome added in 1.0. The official FAQ states that 1.0 focuses on Deep North rather than the Ocean biome. Its Forsaken is Kall Fimbulbringer, and it brings the Vanguard (light), Caller (mage) and Protector (heavy) armor sets plus new ingredients such as lingonberries, kale and oats, and resources including timberwood, frostcore and luminous larva.
Engine and system changes
- Unity engine upgrade — the main reason old mods broke;
- draw distance setting — a new graphics option;
- menu overhaul — the hammer and serving tray were redesigned;
- Magica cloth system — a new cloth and equipment mechanic;
- Ashlands spawn rebalance — late-game enemy density was adjusted.
Which earlier conclusions changed
| Earlier claim | After 1.0 |
|---|---|
| “Valheim is an Early Access game” | Out of date; 1.0 is a full release |
| “Your mods will just keep working” | Iron Gate guarantees nothing, and the engine was upgraded |
| “Achievements will pick up my old kills” | They do not; tracking starts at 1.0 |
| “My old save is dead” | It still works, but new content only generates reliably in unexplored areas, so a new world is recommended |
What to do after updating
Returning players:
- Back up your old save;
- Start a new world if you want the full new-biome experience;
- Clear out incompatible mods and re-enable them one at a time;
- Revisit your gear plan, since the weapon and armor tiers expanded.
New players:
- Start with the Valheim beginner guide;
- Follow the Valheim progression guide to Deep North;
- For the full boss line-up see Valheim boss order and strategies.
Media and player verdicts on 1.0
| Source | Date | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| IGN (Len Hafer) | 2026-09-08 | 10/10 — “the oath of the ultimate survival crafting adventure fulfilled and carved into the very bones of the Earth” |
| PCGamesN (Shaun Walton) | 2026-09-08 | 8/10 — Deep North is “one of the single greatest areas I’ve experienced in gaming,” but getting there “will take days” |
| Postmode | 2026-09-08 | Deep North provides an official ending; the final boss is gated more by its summoning criteria than the encounter |
| Steam players | 2026-09-11 reading | 545,036 reviews across all languages, Very Positive; negatives focus on missing convenience features and slow pacing |
The most consistent community request is convenience: craft from containers, and deposit to nearby chests. The official FAQ says bugfixes and quality-of-life work will continue after 1.0, but commits to nothing specific, so those requests remain unconfirmed.
Media scores are independent verdicts; player data is a sampled reading and review counts are volatile, verified 2026-09-11.
Still unanswered
- Iron Gate will keep fixing bugs and improving quality of life, but how long, and whether more content arrives, is undecided;
- the Deep North boss summoning criteria and phase mechanics are unpublished;
- the Ocean biome received no dedicated 1.0 update.
Version and limits
- This page targets Valheim 1.0 (released 2026-09-09).
- The detailed patch notes are collapsed content on the official page, so this page reproduces only the confirmed categories and scale, never invented item names.
- A 2026-04-28 developer update clarified that an earlier teaser was an April Fools joke; it is not treated as a real update here.
