Valheim armor splits into light, heavy and mage lines that unlock biome by biome. Whether to wear heavy comes down to one question: does this fight want you standing still and blocking, or moving? When you need long dodges, kiting or stealth, light armor’s mobility usually beats a few extra points of defense; in a tight dungeon where you eat hits anyway, heavy armor pays off. And do not overlook the cape — it decides whether you can function in a new biome at all. Without frost resistance, the Mountain drains your health continuously.

Each piece has quality levels 1 to 4, raising defense as you upgrade, and upgrades cost extra materials plus a higher crafting station level.

Light versus heavy: the real trade-off

  • Light: more mobility and dodge freedom, and some sets carry a functional bonus — the Troll set adds sneak, for example. Best for exploring, kiting and fights where you reposition often.
  • Heavy: higher defense with a heavier weight and a clearer movement penalty. Best for standing your ground in confined spaces.
  • Mage: built around eitr and magic output, usually lower defense than the heavy line at the same tier, but it supplies spell-related bonuses.

The test is not “which has more defense,” it is whether you can hold position and keep your damage rhythm. When the movement penalty gets you chased down, heavy armor is a net loss.

Capes and environmental resistance

Capes are the most underestimated slot:

  • Wolf fur cape and lox cape provide frost resistance and are the prerequisite for the Mountain;
  • Feather cape provides frost resistance and removes fall damage, but makes you more vulnerable to fire;
  • some Ashlands capes are flagged on the community wiki as currently unobtainable, so they should not be planned as regular gear.

Entering a biome without the matching resistance is a fight you take continuous damage in.

Are set bonuses worth chasing

Set bonuses usually add a skill bonus or a resistance. Their value depends on your playstyle:

  • sneak bonuses pay off when you actually stealth and backstab;
  • resistance capes are irreplaceable for long sessions in cold or wet environments;
  • a pure damage build can swap a set piece for a higher-defense single item, at the cost of the set bonus.

Is upgrading worth it

Quality upgrades give a linear defense increase against a clearly rising cost. A practical order: push chest and leg pieces to mid-tier for the current biome, then decide whether to keep investing. Dumping every material into a helmet is the lowest-return choice.

New armor in 1.0 and Deep North

The official 1.0 notes confirm 4 new armor sets, 2 new capes, 2 new trinkets and upgradeable pockets. Deep North adds three sets: Vanguard (light), Caller (mage) and Protector (heavy).

What players say about armor

Whether armor is overrated is a long-running community argument, and popular guide videos are titled things like “Armor is OVERRATED.” Some negative Steam reviews also describe the combat as flat, and part of that is how effective stacking defense is compared with practicing execution.

That matches this page’s conclusion: armor’s value depends on whether you need to stand and absorb. In fights that need repositioning, light mobility is worth more than a few points of defense.

Version and limits

  • This page targets Valheim 1.0 (released 2026-09-09).
  • Defense values and material lists are community data and shift between patches; Iron Gate has not published the exact movement penalty, so this page describes it qualitatively.
  • Gear flagged as currently unobtainable is not presented as regular progression.
