Valheim crafting comes in three layers: inventory recipes (stone axe, club, hammer, torch), crafting station recipes (workbench, forge, cauldron, artisan table and later stations), and upgrade-gated levels where a workbench at level 1 through 5 unlocks a different batch each time. When a recipe greys out, work through this order: are you in range, is the station level high enough, are the nearby upgrades present, are the materials exact, and is a prerequisite missing. Almost every “why can’t I craft this” question ends at step two or three.

The crafting station layers

LayerStationMain output
CarriedInventory recipesStone axe, club, hammer, torch
BasicWorkbenchLeather and bronze gear, bows, basic building pieces
MetalForge plus upgradesIron, silver and black metal weapons and armour
CookingCauldron plus upgradesFood and mead
LateArtisan table, blast furnace, black forge, galdr tableDecoration, metal smelting, magic gear

Only inventory recipes ignore station restrictions. Every other recipe appears only when you stand inside the relevant station’s range.

Workbench level decides what you can build

A workbench is not a one-and-done building. It has levels 1 to 5, each unlocking a different batch of recipes, and upgrading requires placing specific items nearby. Armor tables make this explicit: the same piece lists “Workbench 2/3/4/5” as its source, because it only appears at that level.

This is also why the same material behaves differently at different stations — the material has not changed, the facility in front of you has.

Why black metal will not smelt anywhere

Black metal must be smelted in a blast furnace with coal as fuel. A regular smelter will never do it — that is not a bug. The same pattern repeats later: Mistlands magic gear needs a galdr table, and some Ashlands equipment needs a black forge.

So when you have the materials but not the recipe, check whether you are standing at the wrong facility before you assume you are missing something.

Checklist when a recipe will not craft

  1. Range: are you inside the station’s interaction range?
  2. Level: is the station level at or above the recipe requirement?
  3. Upgrades: are the nearby upgrades present and sheltered? A workbench left in the rain drops a level.
  4. Materials: do the types and counts match exactly? Materials are not interchangeable between recipes.
  5. Prerequisites: have you unlocked the skill, recipe chain or building piece that gates it?

Work the list in order and almost nothing stays greyed out.

What 1.0 changed

The official 1.0 patch notes confirm 30+ new crafting materials, 5 new crafting-related build pieces and 80+ new buildable pieces, alongside a menu overhaul for the hammer and serving tray. Deep North also adds resources such as timberwood, frostcore and luminous larva, and those follow exactly the same layering rules.

What media and players say about this system

The most upvoted functional complaint in Steam reviews lands squarely on this page: “No craft from containers or auto-store from inventory” — a 2,481-hour player with 300 upvotes. The same review adds “there’s mods to do that,” which is a path Iron Gate does not support; a 457-hour player filed the same missing convenience under their only reason for a negative review.

IGN (2026-09-08, 10/10) treats crafting and building as the game’s core value, but the review also acknowledges the system went a long time without quality-of-life improvements.

So the practical conclusion is unchanged for the current version: line the workbench with sorted chests. It is the cheapest time saving available in the crafting loop.

Version and limits

  • This page targets Valheim 1.0 (released 2026-09-09).
  • Full recipe lists change between patches, and the community wiki itself flags its crafting page as hard to maintain without an automated recipe system, so this page explains the mechanics and the debugging order rather than reproducing every recipe.
  • Iron Gate has not published the complete recipe-unlock formula; the checklist above is derived from observable behaviour.
