Black metal is not mined. You farm fulings in the Plains for black metal scrap, then process the scrap in a blast furnace using coal as fuel to produce black metal. It is the fourth metal tier, after silver, and it goes into black metal weapons and shields plus black metal chests and several Mistlands facilities. If the recipe will not appear, check the furnace first — a regular smelter will never smelt black metal.

Where the scrap comes from

Black metal scrap drops from the Plains’ fuling faction:

  • fulings, fuling shamans and fuling berserkers can all drop scrap;
  • fuling villages and outposts have higher enemy density, and correspondingly higher risk;
  • the Plains also carry lox and deathsquitos, so clear those before you start looting.

Bring fire and pierce preparation, and do not enter the Plains for the first time at night.

Why a regular smelter will not work

The blast furnace itself is built from earlier-tier materials. Standing at the wrong station does not tell you “you could smelt this elsewhere” — it simply shows the material as invalid, which is why players assume they are missing something.

What black metal builds

Building: black metal chest, pots and pans, plus Mistlands facilities including the ballista, eitr refinery, galdr table, sap extractor and trap.

Weapons: black metal atgeir, axe, battleaxe, knife, sword, shield and tower shield.

Where it sits in the tier list

Black metal is the mid-to-late tier between silver and Ashlands flametal, and its biome is the Plains. Since Yagluth resists fire and pierce, check your damage type before taking black metal weapons into that fight.

Checklist when black metal will not craft

  1. Are you using a blast furnace, not a regular smelter?
  2. Is there coal in the furnace?
  3. Did you put in black metal scrap, not ore you assumed existed?
  4. Is the crafting station level high enough for the weapon recipe?
  5. Remember the transport rule: black metal bars cannot go through portals by default, so plan a boat or land route.

What players say about this material loop

Black metal sits right in the part of the game players describe as the grind. The two most upvoted Steam complaints both point at this loop:

  • “you’ll be running, cutting, mining, sorting out chests for like 90% of your game time” (an 8-hour player, 41 upvotes);
  • “No craft from containers or auto-store from inventory… let me focus on the core gameplay loop” (a 2,481-hour player, 300 upvotes).

PCGamesN (2026-09-08, 8/10) makes the same point about the late game, saying the journey there “will take days.”

The practical fix is to plan the black metal chain once: keep the blast furnace and coal inside your base and move scrap in bulk instead of making separate trips.

Version and limits

  • This page targets Valheim 1.0 (released 2026-09-09).
  • Drop rates are not published by Iron Gate, so no percentages appear here.
  • The craftable list comes from the community wiki and may lag behind 1.0 additions.
  • Portal restrictions have in-game exceptions; treat the default rule as “not teleportable.”
